Barcelona – Newcastle United: Barca Brutalizes Between The Lines (7-2)

As Newcastle United tried to apply pressure man-to-man, this became the perfect playground for Barcelona’s finest to drop in and play through the thirds. A balanced thirty minutes followed the script from the first leg, before Barca destroyed their opponents in the second period.

Champagne was uncorked as Joan Laporta celebrated another election win. A project worth believing in for the Catalan congregation, but the Geordies could still pour cold water on their European ambitions.

Barca left the northeast of England with more than they bargained for. Newcastle was effective in attacking the high line, although their productivity around the box limited the amount of chances they should have taken. Harvey Barnes thought he had scored a famous winner, only for Barca to be given a route into the box for the final move of the game, and Dani Olmo was brought down. Lamine Yamal converted, and a 1-1 scoreline is a favorable result for Barca back at Camp Nou.

Against the medium block, Barca had briefly found a route in the first half, thanks to Fermín López causing a dilemma and Yamal becoming free on the out-to-in run. However, Eddie Howe’s team still had the transitional pace to cause issues. Plenty of knockout games were already wrapped up going into the second legs, but this matchup remained firmly in the balance.
