Real Sociedad – Real Betis: Betis’ transitions punish Real before late pressure rescues a point (2-2)

Real Sociedad and Real Betis played out a game where pressing structures, build-up manipulations, and transition moments constantly shifted control from one side to the other. Real Sociedad’s positional mechanisms allowed them to bypass Betis’ pressure for long stretches, but the aggressive nature of their attacking structure also exposed them to the exact transition attacks that eventually gave Betis a two-goal lead before the hosts mounted a late comeback.

The opening phase of the match revolved around the duel between Real Sociedad’s build-up structure and Betis’ aggressive pressing organization. Out of possession, Real Sociedad defended in a 4-4-2 shape, with the striker pairing alternating responsibilities to deny passes into Marc Roca, who operated as Betis’ lone pivot in their 4-3-3 attacking structure. When the ball circulated toward one side, one striker would jump toward the center-back while the other remained positioned to block access into Roca, and then the roles would reverse when Betis switched sides. The coordination between Mikel Oyarzabal and Orri Óskarsson ensured that Roca was rarely free during the first phase.

Betis responded with an equally sophisticated pressing mechanism. Their high press also resembled a 4-4-2, but unlike many man-oriented systems where the strikers aggressively attack the center-backs, Betis’ forwards prioritized shadow marking the double pivot of Luka Sučić and Jon Gorrotxategi instead. The two strikers essentially created the first wall of a pressing cage, while Roca and Sergi Altimira positioned themselves behind the Real midfielders and Pablo Fornals alongside the wide midfielders blocked the forward passing lanes from the outside . . .
