USA – Paraguay: USMNT put four past Paraguay in their World Cup opener (4–1)
Co-hosts United States kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an electric and clinical 4-1 victory over Paraguay at the packed Los Angeles Stadium. Mauricio Pochettino’s side made a dream start through a 7th-minute forced own goal from Damián Bobadilla, before weathering an energetic second half to assert their technical dominance. A clinical brace from Folarin Balogun and a late trivela insurance strike from substitute Giovanni Reyna sealed the win, completely validating the immense home expectations.

The match was a classic possession-versus-transition duel. Paraguay sat in a compact 4-4-2 block, prioritising central compactness, screening passing lanes, and looking to break forward quickly in vertical transitions through Enciso and Almirón or go long.
The USA controlled the game through sustained possession, using a diamond midfield and aggressive central overloads to progress play, pin Paraguay into a deep block, and consistently manipulate their defensive structure. The decisive edge came from the USA’s superior control of central zones and Paraguay’s poor defensive transition structure when forced to defend sustained territorial pressure.
The tactical layout for this monumental opener saw both managers lean into distinct structural blueprints. The USA took the pitch in a flexible 4-3-3 system that seamlessly transitioned into a fluid 3-1-3-3 shape, starting Matt Freese in goal. The backline featured Alex Freeman, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards, and the veteran Tim Ream. Operating across the wide spaces, Sergiño Dest and Christian Pulisic provided expansive width, flanking a dominant central engine room composed of Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Malik Tillman. Folarin Balogun started as the central striker.
On the other hand, Paraguay countered with a reactive, mid-block 4-4-2 system engineered to absorb immense pressure and strike with high-intensity verticality. Orlando Gill anchored the side behind a defensive line featuring fullbacks Juan José Cáceres and Júnior Alonso flanking center-backs Gustavo Gómez and Omar Alderete. A double pivot of Andrés Cubas and Damián Bobadilla was tasked with suppressing the USA’s interior lanes, leaving wide playmakers Diego Gómez and Miguel Almirón to support Julio Enciso and Antonio Sanabria.
USA’s fluid 3-1-6 overloads Paraguay’s 4-4-2 OOP
Once the USA established sustained possession, their structure evolved into a highly aggressive 3-1-6 in-possession shape, with Adams acting as the sole pivot in front of a back three providing rest defence, and both Robinson and Dest pushed extremely high to stretch Paraguay’s defensive block horizontally.
Higher up the pitch, Pulisic drifted inside from the left, McKennie advanced into the right half-space, and Tillman operated as a free connector behind Balogun, creating constant central overloads and between-the-lines superiority. This positional structure pinned Paraguay’s compact 4-4-2 deep, repeatedly isolating their wide players in 1v1 defending scenarios—especially on the USA right where Dest consistently broke lines with progressive carries and high-volume crossing. On the left, it was more of combination plays between Pulisic and Robinson.
The sustained territorial pressure eventually broke Paraguay’s block in the 7th minute, as a sharp combination between Pulisic and McKennie pierced the halfspace and produced a cutback into a crowded six-yard area, forcing a Bobadilla own goal under intense box congestion and confirming the USA’s early dominance.

Minute 12′: USA’s fluid 3-1-6 in-possession structure overloads Paraguay’s compact 4-4-2 out-of-possession defensive shape.
Balogun’s brace
With the early advantage secured, the tactical game shifted completely to the USA’s left flank, where the visitors simply could not handle the sheer volume of rotations engineered by Pulisic and Robinson. Flood-pinning the final third forced Paraguay’s right midfielder, Diego Gómez, into an exhausting, deeply defensive role. Initially, Gómez performed well under immense duress, diligently dropping back to block the halfspace passing lanes toward Pulisic or tracking the overlapping lungbursts of Robinson. However, managing the synchronized counter-movements of the American duo soon proved an impossible task for Gómez and right-back Juan José Cáceres.
Pulisic and Robinson dismantled Paraguay’s right flank by constantly exchanging their positioning with great chemistry to destroy the visitor’s marking responsibilities. At times, Robinson would hold the width while Pulisic underlapped into central zones; at other moments, Robinson dropped deep or move into the halfspace to pull markers out of position while Pulisic pinned the defensive line high and attacked his marker. These sophisticated, rehearsed spatial interchanges meant Paraguay’s wide defenders were perpetually paralyzed, unable to pass off their marking duties without leaving catastrophic gaps behind them.
This exact rotational mechanism directly manufactured the brilliant 31st-minute second goal. While remaining deep on the left, Robinson delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the vacated channel on the left. Latching onto the ball, Pulisic drove inward to compromise the backline before cutting back to Folarin Balogun, who clinically fired into the net to make it 2-0.

Minute 31′: The synchronized left-side combination sequence between Robinson and Pulisic to set up Balogun’s opening goal.
The clinical assault yielded a third before the interval. In first-half stoppage time, Malik Tillman unpicked the defensive line with a phenomenal threaded vertical through ball. Balogun timed his run to perfection, shrugging off a sliding challenge and getting the better of center-backs Omar Alderete and Gustavo Gómez before swiveling to blast an unstoppable strike into the top corner with his weaker left foot, establishing a commanding 3-0 lead.
Paraguay go long
Faced with a three-goal deficit, Gustavo Alfaro looked to alter the game’s momentum at the break, introducing Maurício for own-goal scorer Damián Bobadilla, while Mauricio Pochettino opted to protect Christian Pulisic by bringing on Sebastian Berhalter. Maurício moved to the left while Almiron shifted to the right midfield position. Needing an immediate lifeline, La Albirroja turned up their physical intensity, aggressively pressing the USA high up the pitch to disrupt their clean build-up play and win the ball back in dangerous areas.

Minute 61′: USA calmly progressed the ball on the right to get past Paraguay’s high press. Ream found Robinson in space, who then carried the ball into the middle third before laying it off to Adams to find McKennie. McKennie then played to Dest high and wide on the right.
However, when possession was achieved, Paraguay’s offensive strategy lacked variety, relying almost exclusively on launching direct long balls up to lone striker Antonio Sanabria, with the rest of the midfield sprinting forward to hunt down the second balls.
The hosts’ defensive line dealt comfortably with this aerial bombardment for most of the game, anchored by a historic, error-free distribution performance from Chris Richards, who completed a modern World Cup record of 84 out of 84 passes (100% accuracy).
Yet, Paraguay’s persistence finally paid dividends in the 73rd minute. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill launched a deep, booming free-kick down the pitch that caught the USA defense disorganized. The backline failed to clean up the bouncing ball, allowing Miguel Almirón to bring it under control and slide a pass through to Julio Enciso. With time to turn in the final third, Enciso spotted Maurício completely unmarked on the left, who marked his arrival by finishing with aplomb past Matt Freese exactly 27 minutes after his introduction.
Despite pulling a goal back, Paraguay’s aggressive posture ultimately played into the hosts’ hands as structural fatigue set in late. Leaving spaces behind in their pursuit of an unlikely comeback, the visitors were punished deep into stoppage time. In the 98th minute, second-half substitute Giovanni Reyna capitalized on the vacated space on the edge of the box, executing a spectacular trivela strike into the far corner to finalize the 4-1 scoreline and seal a dominant opening win.

Minute 64′: Paraguay’s direct long-ball progression against the USA’s press. Mauricio dropped deep from the left wing, dragging Freeman along. Enciso recognised the space as Alonso played a long ball towards him.
Takeaways
The USA delivered a dominant, control-heavy performance built on a territory-pinning 3-1-6 structure, sustained possession, and strong central and flank overloads, with Pulisic and Dest’s 1v1 threat and Richards’ elite distribution key to their control of the game.
Despite conceding once from a second-phase long-ball situation, their overall game management and structural superiority secured a convincing statement win.
They now carry strong momentum into their next Group D match against Australia, while Paraguay are left needing tactical and mental recovery to stay alive in the group as they face Turkey next.
