Newcastle United – Manchester United: Carrick’s Side Fail To Capitalize (2-1)

Newcastle were the slightly better team in the first half as United's buildup plan did not quite work. A red card for Jacob Ramsey gave United a golden chance to seize the initiative though. However, they were unable to take it, and were punished by William Osula's late goal.

Newcastle United find themselves somewhat languishing in midtable as March rolls around in this Premier League season -- a backwards step after having established themselves as European contenders in recent years. Manchester United meanwhile were unbeaten in seven matches under interim manager Michael Carrick, having most recently come from behind to win against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford at the weekend.

Eddie Howe's side lined up in a 4-3-3 shape here, with Kieran Trippier, Malick Thiaw, Dan Burn, and Lewis Hall in the back four. Sandro Tonali anchored the midfield with Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton ahead of him, while the frontline comprised Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes.

United meanwhile started with a 4-2-3-1 shape, with a back four of Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw. Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo continued their central midfield partnership, while Bruno Fernandes started as number ten. Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha then flanked striker Benjamin Šeško.
