With Bayern Munich crowned back-to-back Bundesliga champions last weekend, all eyes were focused on the teams fighting for European qualification. Leading the pack is RB Leipzig, who remained in a strong position as they sat in third place.
Nevertheless, Ole Werner knew that this spot was not held comfortably, with Hoffenheim and Stuttgart in fairly close proximity. Furthermore, he would have set his sights on a last-minute clinch of second place as Borussia Dortmund dropped points with two losses on the bounce.
Union Berlin have struggled in recent weeks, with Steffen Baumgart sacked having only been brought in December. Marie-Louise Eta was appointed instead. This marked a historic moment in the sport as Eta became the first female coach of a men’s team in Europe’s top five leagues.
Although Union are a few spots away from the relegation zone, they were not in a comfortable position, with only five points separating them and 16th-placed St. Pauli. Having not won a game in over a month, Union were desperate to get points on the board and create a larger gap from the drop zone.
