Brentford came into this match having not lost a game so far this season. Their record included 3-0 wins over both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, and the Bees will have been hoping that Liverpool would be their next scalp.
Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool side fell to their first Premier League defeat of the season last weekend against Manchester City. A goalfest away at LASK in midweek helped lift the mood for a Liverpool side who are still finding their feet under their new coach.
Keith Andrews lined his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation here with a back four of Michael Kayode, Sepp van den Berg, Kristoffer Ajer, and Keane Lewis-Potter. Vitaly Janelt and Yehor Yarmolyuk made up the double pivot with Mathias Jensen as number ten. Dango Ouattara and Jaidon Anthony then flanked striker Igor Thiago.
For Liverpool it was also a 4-2-3-1 shape. Ronald Araújo again played as a right back alongside Jérémy Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, and Milos Kerkez. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were the central midfielders while Florian Wirtz started as the number ten with Víctor Muñoz and Bradley Barcola either side. Alexander Isak then led the line up front.
