Long has Atalanta been building, but could this finally be the year Bergamo finds its bliss? AC Milan found routes through, but Gasperini’s tweak solidified his man-marking scheme once more.

Two Champions League outfits have had big results so far this season, but Atalanta and Milan went into this game on very different wavelengths.

Eight Serie A wins in a row have seen a Scudetto discourse grow on Gian Piero Gasperini’s team. A squad with depth and quality, a coach who has been there for a long time and a club punching above its weight: Atalanta are bringing Sampdoria 1990 vibes to the table. After five different winners in a row, it is certainly not out of the question for a team as stable as they are.

Milan wants to be in the same conversation but has struggled to find consistency under Paulo Fonseca. There is no doubt about quality, Tijani Reijnders has hit fantastic form, whilst Christian Pulisic is having his most impactful season for a while. However, for every Real Madrid and Inter away performance, there is a draw to Cagliari that comes by.

Gasperini made two changes to the team that beat Roma at the start of the week. Odilon Kossounou was replaced by one of Atalanta’s defensive generals, Berat Djimsiti, at the right of the back three. Top scorer Mateo Retegui was the other change, replaced by the Croatian midfielder, Mario Pašalić.
