Crystal Palace – Liverpool: Eagles Soar Despite Slot’s Adjustments (2-1)
Crystal Palace were the better team in the first half here thanks to their fast attacks and organized defending against a Liverpool team still finding their best arrangement with new personnel. Arne Slot's side showed second-half improvement after some changes, but Palace eventually prevailed with a late Eddie Nketiah winner.
Tactical analysis and match report by Josh Manley.
Both teams came into this game in good spirits. FA Cup holders Crystal Palace were unbeaten in their last seventeen games and had already inflicted defeat on Liverpool last month. Meanwhile their opponents Liverpool had begun their title defense with a run of five straight wins, most recently overcoming Merseyside rivals Everton.
Oliver Glasner's side lined up in a 3-4-3 shape with a back three of Chris Richards, Maxence Lacroix, and Marc Guéhi. Daniel Muñoz and Tyrick Mitchell were the wing-backs, while Daichi Kamada partnered Adam Wharton in central midfield. Ismaïla Sarr and Yéremy Pino then supported Jean-Philippe Mateta up front.
