Lecce – AC Milan: Milan Cruise To Routine Victory As Modric Pulls The Strings (0-2)

AC Milan beat Lecce 2-0 in what seemed to be a tricky away fixture, which turned routine. Two disallowed goals for Milan led to eventual goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic in the second half. Milan won the game comfortably with new signing Luka Modric pulling the strings.

“Invent yourself, and then reinvent yourself”, wrote reclusive poet Charles Bukowski in one of his poetic works. In that sense, it’s certainly been a phase of reinvention for the red and black half of Milan. Last season’s managerial turmoil and 8th-place finish are now just a fading memory. The new Serie A season has begun and if Milan are to push for a much better finish than the last campaign and try to get into the top four, they’ll have to reinvent their style of play.

In that context, the acquisition of Luka Modric has been astute. Despite Modric’s age, the midfielder glided along the pitch in this game against Lecce, picking passes, one and two at a time. Modric is the footballer’s footballer. His physical attributes may be dwindling, but Modric’s game was never about the physical. It is all cerebral. Modric provided the progression from midfield and expert set-piece delivery in this game to run the show as Milan cruised to a routine 2-0 away victory.
