The atmosphere in West Yorkshire was electric as Leeds United, unbeaten in seven, welcomed a Manchester United side grappling with an injury crisis. Ruben Amorim, missing eight senior players including captain Bruno Fernandes (thigh) and Kobbie Mainoo (calf), was forced to lean on youth and defensive versatility. For Farke, this was an opportunity to end a 23-year league drought against their arch-rivals, utilizing a high-intensity approach designed to rattle a threadbare United squad.
Leeds United utilized a 3-4-2-1 formation. Lucas Perri stood in goal behind a defensive trio of Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jaka Bijol, and Pascal Struijk. James Justin and Gabriel Gudmundsson provided the width, while Ilia Gruev and Anton Stach anchored the midfield. Brenden Aaronson and Noah Okafor operated in the pockets behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Manchester United operated in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1. Senne Lammens started in goal behind a back three of Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martínez, and the 19-year-old Ayden Heaven. The midfield featured Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte as the double pivot, with Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw providing width. Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu supported Benjamin Šeško up front.
Man United build from the back
Leeds initiated the game with a ferocious, man-to-man press that sought to exploit the inexperience in the United backline. When United attempted to build from Senne Lammens, Amorim pushed Ayden Heaven into the midfield line alongside Casemiro to create a 2-2 box with the wide center-backs, while the less technical Manuel Ugarte was pushed higher to be less involved in the initial build-up phase.
Leeds adjusted their press to lock this down: Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were tasked with jumping onto Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martínez respectively. Behind them, Ilia Gruev backed up the press by jumping onto the advancing Heaven, using his cover shadow to block passing lanes into Ugarte. Meanwhile, Brenden Aaronson shadowed Casemiro to erase United’s primary playmaker, and Anton Stach was vital in covering Ugarte and the surrounding space in midfield. On the flanks, United’s wing-backs were tightly marked by James Justin and Gudmundsson, turning the build-up into a series of high-stakes 1v1 duels.

Cunha’s drops deep, Sesko the target man
United’s difficulties in progressing play were largely rooted in the limited technical security and press-resistance of their deeper lines. With circulation from the defenders often slow and predictable under Leeds’ pressure, United increasingly relied on Matheus Cunha dropping into deeper zones to act as a facilitator. By receiving between the lines or even ahead of the center-backs, Cunha used his close control and Brazilian flair to evade markers and carry possession forward.
When access into Cunha was restricted, United shifted to a more direct route, targeting Benjamin Šeško as a reference point. Vertical or long passes into the striker were used to set wall passes, win duels and bring the other players into play. This allowed United to bypass the congested midfield zones and sustain attacks higher up the pitch, neutralizing Leeds’ man-to-man aggression by going over the top of the press. The likes of Cunha, Ugarte and Dorgu are always quick to win the second ball.

Gruev dictates for Leeds
When Leeds had possession, they frequently transitioned into a 3-2-5 structure to progress the ball and penetrate United’s defensive lines. United countered this by forming a compact 5-2-3 mid-block, patiently waiting for triggers to initiate a sudden man-oriented press. From this block, United’s front three jumped aggressively onto Leeds’ back three, while Casemiro and Ugarte tracked Gruev and Stach. At the back, Lisandro Martínez followed Aaronson between the lines, Heaven stayed tight to Calvert-Lewin, and Yoro marked Okafor, with the wing-backs stepping out to engage their counterparts.
Leeds, however, disrupted this through Ilia Gruev’s intelligent movement. By occasionally dropping into the back line, he forced Casemiro into a dilemma: follow him deeper and vacate central midfield spaces for Okafor or Aaronson to exploit, or hold his position and allow Gruev to dictate play from deep. Despite being subbed off in the 80th minute, Gruev ended the game with the most passes completed for Leeds United, showing his great influence. This adjustment helped Leeds sustain possession effectively, particularly in the first half, and briefly unsettled United’s pressing rhythm.

Heaven outpaced, Zirkzee and Cunha save the Red Devils
The deadlock was finally broken just after the hour mark through a lapse in concentration. An unexpected long ball from Struijk was misjudged by Ayden Heaven, who allowed the ball to bounce multiple times in front of him as he chases back. Brenden Aaronson reacted with predatory speed, stealing a march on the young defender and calmly slotting a finish into the corner to send Elland Road into a frenzy.
United’s quick equaliser emerged from a well-orchestrated attacking pattern within Amorim’s 3-2-5 possession structure. With Yoro subbed off for Joshua Zirkzee, Dalot moved into the right-sided center-back role, allowing Dorgu to advance as the right wing-back and stretch Leeds’ defensive line. Šeško and Zirkzee drew Leeds’ center-backs higher, disrupting their line and opening a central channel. Zirkzee identified the space and threaded a perfectly weighted pass for Cunha, who timed his run to perfection and, spotting Lucas Perri’s moment of hesitation, produced a delicate finish to level the scores at 1-1. Beyond the goal, Zirkzee’s impact as a connective presence was clear, creating two chances in just 27 minutes.

Both sides hold firm
Senne Lammens was crucial for the Reds, making a fine save to deny Noah Okafor, while Benjamin Sesko missed a close-range effort as both teams searched for a late winner. Cunha came close on multiple occasions, hitting the outside of the post from distance and later curling an effort against the post after Dorgu’s strong run created space. Okafor also reacted quickly to a dangerous long throw, attempting an acrobatic shot that Lammens pushed to safety. The Reds’ attacking duo, Cunha and Zirkzee, combined well again, with Zirkzee delivering a quality cross for Sesko, who could not convert. Late in the match, Joel Piroe nearly scored for Leeds, bending a powerful shot toward the top corner after Stach’s pass, but it went wide. In four minutes of added time, Leeds applied heavy pressure with successive corners, but the Reds held firm to secure a hard-earned point on the road.
Takeaways
Manchester United proved their resilience under Ruben Amorim, digging deep with a depleted squad to secure a point. While the defensive lapses from Heaven will be a talking point, the quick tactical response and the form of Matheus Cunha suggest United are developing a scrapper mentality. For Leeds, the result extends their impressive unbeaten run, proving they can dictate the tempo against the league’s elite through aggressive organization and intelligent positional rotations.
