Lille hosted RC Strasbourg at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in a crucial clash for the European places, with Bruno Génésio’s side sitting fifth in Ligue 1 and holding a five-point advantage over their opponents.

The hosts were determined to secure a victory that would keep their hopes of UEFA Champions League qualification alive and lined up in a 5-4-1 formation led by Berke Özer in goal, with Tiago Santos, Nathan Ngoy, Chancel Mbemba, Aïssa Mandi and Romain Perraud in defence. Ngal’ayel Mukau and Ayyoub Bouaddi formed the double pivot, while Ethan Mbappé, Olivier Giroud and Matías Fernández-Pardo made up the attacking line.

Strasbourg, meanwhile, were playing their second Ligue 1 match under English coach Gary O’Neil following Liam Rosenior’s move to Chelsea. The visitors lined up in a 4-2-3-1 shape with Mike Penders in goal, Ismael Doukouré and Mads Sarr at centre-back, and dynamic full-backs Ben Chilwell and Guéla Doué on the flanks. Valentín Barco and Samir El Mourabet operated in midfield, with Martial Godo and Diego Moreira on the wings, Julio Enciso floating centrally, and Joaquín Panichelli leading the line.

A strong start for the hosts
