Lyon and Monaco both put on dull, slow, and uninspiring performances in a game filled with errors. Monaco had a hard time trying to generate clear-cut chances despite Lyon's inability to complete their passes.

Lyon lost in both of their prior meetings with Monaco last season, three to two and one to nil. This season, they meet again at the Groupama Stadium in front of an enthusiastic crowd, with flags waving.

Monaco made one change from their opening day one-nil win against Saint-Etienne, placing Folarin Balogun on the bench. They lined up with Philipp Köhn in goal. Ismail Jacobs, Mohammed Salisu, Thilo Kehrer, and Vanderson were at the back. Denis Zakaria and Lamine Camara anchored the midfield. Takumi Minamino played in attacking midfield, with Maghnes Akliouche at right-wing, Eliesse Ben Seghir at left-wing, and Breel Embolo at center-forward.

Monaco made three changes from their one-nil loss to Rennes, placing Nemanja Matic, Orel Mangala, and Georges Mikautadze on the bench. They lined up with Lucas Perri in goal. Clinton Mata, Duje Caleta-Car, Moussa Niakhaté, and Abner were at the back. Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Maxence Caqueret anchored the midfield. Said Benrahma played in attacking midfield, with Ernest Nuamah at right-wing, Malick Fofana at left-wing, and Alexandre Lacazette at center-forward.
