The balance of this match was determined early on by Giovanni Di Lorenzo's red card. From that point on, it was attack versus defense, with City trying to break down Napoli's five-man low-block defense. Eventually they broke through in the second half thanks to excellent moments from the likes of Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, and Jérémy Doku.

Manchester City came into this match on the back of their 3-0 Manchester derby win at the weekend. Although they were perhaps not as dominant in possession in the second half as one might expect from a Pep Guardiola team, they were clinical in the final third, with Erling Haaland in good form.

Napoli meanwhile have won all three of their opening Serie A fixtures as they look to defend their title. However, the most notable narrative for this game was of course the return of Kevin De Bruyne to the Etihad Stadium.

City lined up in a 4-3-3 shape, unchanged from the weekend's win over Manchester United. Abdukodir Khusanov, Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol, and Nico O'Reilly formed the back four, with Rodri sitting in front. Tijjani Reijnders and Bernardo Silva were the number eights, with Phil Foden and Jérémy Doku flanking Haaland up front.
