Olympique de Marseille – AS Monaco: Marseille Leave It Late Against Wasteful Monaco (1-0)

Olympique de Marseille and AS Monaco brought the curtains down on 2025 for Ligue 1 with a topsy-turvy contest. Monaco would return home frustrated that twice they would have the ball in the back of the net and twice they would see their efforts ruled out. Marseille had no such ill-fortune, finding the winner in the 80th minute to end a blip of two games without a victory.

Tactical analysis and match report by Nick Hartland.

Olympique de Marseille’s title credentials were put to the test in a bruising fortnight. A 2-2 draw with Toulouse FC was followed by a 1-0 loss to Lille OSC. Results that saw Marseille’s chance to take top spot slip away. Instead, they were forced to play catch-up coming into this weekend with Paris Saint-Germain and our unlikely leaders, RC Lens.

AS Monaco would make the short trip to their rivals in poor spirits. Itchy fingers had seen the dismissal of Adi Hütter following a 2-2 draw with ten-man OGC Nice, but results have not picked up with his successor, Sébastien Pocognoli. The principality were coming into thai game having lost four of their last five fixtures in the league: the aberration, a win against PSG.

Roberto De Zerbi picked a 4-2-3-1 shape for this game. Gerónimo Rulli was in goal with a defense of Emerson Palmieri, Nayef Aguerd, Benjamin Pavard, and Michael Amir Murillo. In midfield, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Geoffrey Kondogbia. Timothy Weah replaced Igor Paixão on the left, with Arthur Vermeeren as the no.10, and Mason Greenwood on the right. Up front, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
