Paris Saint-Germain – AS Monaco: Trophy in stoppage time (1-0)
A great matchup opened the year in France, deciding the first title of the French Super Cup: two title contenders, Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain and Adi Hütter’s AS Monaco; the Parisians with a clear identification with positional play, and the Monegasques presenting relational patterns as a counterpoint.
Tactical analysis and match report by Juan Lauz.
The Paris Saint-Germain were preparing to continue their positive trend in France. After finishing the year as leaders of Ligue 1 with a seven-point advantage over Marseille, they were getting ready to win their first title of the season. Regarding their last match, which was also against Monaco, they made two changes: Nuno Mendes replaced Fabián Ruíz, and João Neves was moved to midfield; Bradley Barcola made way for Kang-in Lee, who would play on the right, with Désiré Doué (who had played as a striker in that match) as the left winger and Ousmane Dembélé as the central attacking reference.
On the other hand, Adi Hütter’s men were aiming for their first domestic title since the 2016/2017 Ligue 1 season, when Kylian Mbappé was still playing for them. For this, they lined up with two center-backs, Mohammed Salisu and Thilo Kehrer, accompanied by fullbacks Caio Henrique on the left and Vanderson on the right; Aleksandr Golovin and Denis Zakaria would share the double pivot, with Eliesse Ben Seghir and Maghnes Akliouche playing as attacking midfielders; Takumi Minamino played as a second striker and George Ilenikhena was the main forward.
