With Kylian Mbappé’s post-season departure all but officially announced, Paris Saint-Germain knew that this was the best shot they would get at the Champions League trophy they have so desperately been seeking over the last decade or so. Going down fighting against one of Europe’s strongest teams would be an honorable defeat at least, but getting knocked out by a Borussia Dortmund team struggling to keep up with the top four in the Bundesliga would not be nearly good enough even in the semifinal. A turnaround on home turf was just hope but a requirement.
Borussia Dortmund should have been pleased with the win at the Westfalenstadion, but the job was far from done. A return to Wembley for a first Champions League final in over a decade was the reward on offer if they held their nerve, but that would be much easier said than done.
