Sometimes the final scorelines do not reflect the events of a match. The clash between Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig on Saturday evening proved to be one of those, but the extreme versions. Despite a plethora of chances created by both teams, only a goal separated them in an entertaining and dramatic contest.

Wolfsburg has endured a mixed start to the Bundesliga campaign. A win, two draws, and a loss against Borussia Dortmund have yielded varying performances, with the results roughly meeting expectations. Their output in front of goal, despite not creating a high volume of chances, has been good. Seven goals from those four games were definitely a big positive for manager Paul Simonis. However, their leaky defense was unable to keep a clean sheet in any of those games – standing out as the most urgent area of improvement for Wolfsburg.

After suffering a heavy thrashing by the reigning champions on the opening day, RB Leipzig recovered quickly and strung together consecutive wins in the following matches. Despite conceding just one in those three games, Leipzig has not looked flawless defensively, similar to their opposition on Saturday. However, their offensive unit has clicked with the system shift under Ole Werner.
