As the Bundesliga reached its penultimate rounds of the season, there is still much to fight for despite Bayern Munich being crowned champions last weekend after their thrilling 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig. Xabi Alonso was hoping to end his Bayer Leverkusen career on a positive note after the official announcement that he will be departing in the summer to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

Alonso’s accomplishments at Leverkusen have built him a long-lasting legacy. When he took over as manager, the club was a relegation candidate. Not only did he save them that season, but in the following campaign, Leverkusen went on an unprecedented unbeaten league run that saw them lifting the Meisterschale for the first time in history.

Despite the 2024–25 season not going according to plan, the Leverkusen supporters will be ever grateful to the Spaniard who has propelled the club to new heights within a short period. Although their second-place league finish is secured, in the final few matches as club manager, Alonso would have hoped to conclude with victories.
