Rayo Vallecano edged Celta Vigo on the penultima matchday of the Spanish La Liga. The Madrid side’s first-half high press and sustained pressure in possession allowed them to take a lead into the break. The hosts defended deeper and made quick transitions into attack in the first half and pegged the visitors back in the second, but they came up short in the end.

It was seventh against eighth in La Liga as Celta Vigo took on Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de Balaídos, with both teams battling it out to secure one of the final European football spots.
Claudio Giráldez’s Celta were looking to string together three consecutive victories following wins over Sevilla and Real Sociedad. The Galician outfit needed three points to seal their place in the Europa League with just two games to go in the Spanish Primera División.
Meanwhile, Iñigo Pérez’s Rayo went into the clash on the back of a 2-2 draw against Real Betis. Los Vallecanos were under pressure to emerge victorious from Vigo with three sides hot on their tail to pip them to the final European position.
Celta boss Claudio Giráldez went with his usual 3-4-3 formation with Vicente Guaita in goal, and the coach welcomed back Marcos Alonso following his suspension, and Alonso lined up on the left of a back three alongside Javi Rodríguez and Yoel Lago.
