Villarreal’s approach in possession was clearly structured around a 3-2-5 shape, designed to stretch Athletic both horizontally and vertically. Right-back Mouriño inverted into the backline, forming a three-man structure alongside Navarro and Veiga. Ahead of them, Comesaña and Gueye operated as a double pivot, while five attackers occupied the highest line.
The width on the left came from Cardona, the left-back, while Buchanan mirrored that role on the right. Between them, Gonzales tucked inside as an interior, joining Oluwaseyi and Gerard Moreno in central zones. This distribution allowed Villarreal to maintain width while flooding the interior spaces with technical players capable of receiving between lines.
Athletic, meanwhile, defended in their characteristic 4-4-2 mid-block. The structure emphasized compactness, with two narrow lines of four and forwards positioned to screen passes into midfield. Valverde’s intent was clear: deny central access and force Villarreal wide.
