Villarreal – Real Betis: Villarreal’s aggressive approach comes back to haunt them (1–2)

Villarreal and Real Betis produced a game of contrasting tactical approaches, with Iñigo Pérez’s aggressive pressing and attacking structure causing Betis significant problems before becoming the source of their own downfall. Betis struggled to build through Villarreal’s pressure but grew into the match as Villarreal became increasingly aggressive, eventually exploiting the spaces behind their full-backs to secure a two-one victory.

With the ball, Villarreal adopted a three-one structure. The two centre-backs were joined by Comesaña to form the back three, while Gueye remained as the lone pivot. This allowed both full-backs to advance aggressively and occupy higher attacking positions.

Without the ball Betis defended in a 4-4-2, with Isco moving alongside Hernández to form the front two. Villarreal’s two forwards had considerable freedom, and Gerard Moreno in particular operated as a false nine. His movements created problems because Betis were often late in recognizing them: defenders would jump too late, or sometimes refuse to jump altogether because their priority was maintaining the integrity of the last line.

Villarreal understood another important characteristic of Betis’ defensive behavior. Pellegrini’s side is known for maintaining a high offside line around the edge of the penalty area rather than immediately dropping inside it. This can catch opponents offside, but it also creates the possibility of leaving the defensive line too high and vulnerable to movements behind it. We'll look into this tactic more later on, but Villarreal repeatedly looked to manipulate this space.
