Greece – Germany: Jovanović Frustrates Klopp Again (0-0)

After a surprising 1-0 victory over Germany a week prior, Greece were set to host the 2014 World Cup winners. In a crucial match in Group B, this was an interesting fixture to keep an eye on in case Greece caused another upset. The match was yet again a marginal affair. Although both teams had their moments, it ended 0-0, but there were fascinating tactical details to observe and discuss.

Following an emphatic UEFA Nations League upset a week prior, the match between Greece and Germany had many spectators interested. Although they did not generate a high volume of chances, Germany had their moments, especially with Karim Adeyemi’s opportunity in the first half. Nevertheless, they were generally restricted to long shots by Greece, who attempted to control the game off the ball rather than with it. That is exactly why Ivan Jovanović’s side ended with less than 30% possession. Greece mostly relied on counterattacks and chaotic situations, which benefitted them against Germany as Dimitris Kourbelis scored late in the second half.

Tactically, their rematch was expected to carry many of the same themes. Especially considering that Greece impressively also picked up seven points in their opening three games, it was almost certain that Jovanović would be comfortable with ceding possession control against Jürgen Klopp’s team, who had not yet looked too convincing following a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, a 2-0 victory against Serbia, and the defeat to Greece.
