Atlético Madrid – Manchester United: No End In Sight for Manchester United Suffering (2-0)
The bleeding of Manchester United does not seem to have an end. Below-average individual performances and collective tactical shortcomings accelerate the fall of the Red Devils in games. This time, Atlético Madrid made the most of Manchester United's flaws to return on track in the Champions League.
Tactical analysis and match report by Achraf Lamdarhri.
Since the start of the season, Manchester United have been in dire straits. The Red Devils have only won twice against Ipswich Town in the Premier League and Sabah FK in the Champions League. Manchester United faced an early elimination from the EFL Cup against Brighton after surrendering a two-goal lead against the Seagulls. Currently, the team sits in thirteenth place in the Premier League with six points, which makes it one of the worst starts to a season for Michael Carrick's side. Manchester United looks shattered out of possession and easy to cut through and exploit their defensive frailties. In possession, Carrick's team is able to create chances. However, the quality is missing despite the quantity.
On the other hand, Atlético Madrid had a better start to the season, accumulating 18 points out of 24 possible. That saw Los Rojiblancos occupy second place in La Liga behind Barcelona. Before the international break, Diego Simeone's team reinforced its superiority over rivals in the same city at Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, beating Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho in a frantic atmosphere. However, in the Champions League, Atlético Madrid fell to Liverpool at Anfield after relinquishing a one-goal lead, and they look to win their first home match against Manchester United.
