Atalanta – Arsenal: Raya Heroics Ensure Stalemate In Bergamo (0-0)

Arsenal started this game brightly, but Atalanta’s aggressive man-marking system eventually reigned them in and began to get a foothold in the game. The decisive moment in the match occurred just after half-time, when David Raya’s impressive goalkeeping stopped Matoe Retegui’s penalty and rebound, with the game resulting in an eventual stalemate.

Europa League holders Atalanta hosted Arsenal for their first matchday in this season’s revamped Champions League format. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side haven’t had the ideal start to the season, losing to Torino and being thrashed 4-0 by Inter. Arsenal, meanwhile, have been able to secure key wins away at Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur in the early weeks.  

Atalanta lined up in a 3-4-3 formation here, with a back three of Berat Djimsiti, Isak Hien, and former Arsenal man Sead Kolašinac. Davide Zappacosta and Matteo Ruggeri were the wing-backs, while Marten de Roon and Éderson partnered in central midfield. The forward trio then comprised of Charles De Ketelaere, Mateo Retegui, and Ademola Lookman . . .
