As the ball nestled into the net off Berat Djimsiti following Marcus Thuram’s attempted low cross, you could see Simone Inzaghi punching the air to signal his side’s intent of retaining the Serie A title this season. The champions got off to a flyer in the third minute but there were no illusions, Inzaghi has taken this Inter side to the pinnacle of Italian football since his appointment & on this particular night they would stamp their authority as title contenders, yet again.
Of course, calling it the Giuseppe Meazza instead of the San Siro is a matter of taste, but ask any Inter fan & they’ll tell you what they prefer. Meazza himself is a legendary figure in Italian football, guiding Italy to World Cup triumph under manager Vittorio Pozzo in 1934 & 1938 with popular recognition of being as tough as a ‘bullfighter’ & a song during his time with the lyrics ‘he scores to the rhythm of a foxtrot’. Meazza holds his own rightful place in the annals of Italian football history, and it’s certain that he would have adored this reinvention of his beloved Inter under Inzaghi.
