Athletic CLub – Real Sociedad: Control without closure: Real Sociedad let the derby slip (1-1)
The Basque derby unfolded with late drama, as Real Sociedad let the game slip away after a controversial red card destroyed the good game Materazzo's men were having. The very intense derby left us interesting tactical blue prints for both teams, as they look to climb the La Liga table.
Tactical analysis and match report by Sebastián Parreño.
Athletic started in a 4-2-3-1 shape built around a double pivot and wide attacking threats, while Real Sociedad lined up in a 4-4-2 that was more fluid than the nominal formation suggested. The visitors’ key idea was not about wing isolation, but about interior occupation. With Barrenetxea absent and no natural winger available, Matarazzo deployed Marín on the left as a false winger. His job was to abandon the touchline, drift inside, and manufacture space for Sergio Gómez’s forward runs from left-back. At the same time, Luka Sučić regularly stepped down from the striker line to join Marín between the lines, creating a midfield box with the double pivot behind them.
This central staggering was designed to stretch Athletic vertically. Real Sociedad effectively built two lines of attack: the holding pair to circulate and protect, and an advanced interior pair capable of receiving under pressure and turning. The intention was clear. If Athletic compressed centrally, through balls could be launched toward Guedes or Oyarzabal. If they did not, Real could dominate possession between the lines and dictate the tempo of the derby.
