Atlético’s asymmetrical attacking structure meets Athletic’s compact block
Atlético Madrid’s initial attacking structure was ambitious and clearly designed to overload central spaces. In possession, they built in a very particular shape: an asymetrical 2-2-5-1 shape, with the center-backs forming the first line and Koke positioned as a lone pivot. Marcos Llorente operated on the same height as him, but totally out wide and not alongside him. Meanwhile, a line of five attackers stretched across the pitch. This included Ruggeri providing width on the left, Giuliano Simeone wide on the right, and a central trio of Baena, Griezmann, and Barrios positioned between the lines behind Athletic’s double pivot.

The intention behind this structure was clear: overload the central corridor and pin Athletic’s midfield double pivot, Ruiz de Galarreta and Rego, while simultaneously fixing the fullbacks through wide positioning. Baena’s role was particularly important, as his positioning pinned the right-back and freed Ruggeri to advance on the left flank.
