Atlético Madrid – Real Madrid: Atleti Comeback From The Dead After Violence Boils Over At The Metropolitano (1-1)

Atletico Madrid snatched a draw from the edges of defeat against Real Madrid at the Metropolitano. Militao’s second-half goal for Real was cancelled out late on by Correa after the game was stopped in the second half because of fan violence inside the stadium.

The Madrid derby is nearly always a highly dramatic and tightly contested affair and last night’s game was no different. Against the backdrop of the packed animosity of the Atleti fans inside the Metropolitano, this derby was firmly the Madrid derby’s latest evolution in 2024/25. Things were pretty fierce at the Calderon, but the Metropolitano with its significantly larger size posed as an even more formidable place for Los Blancos to come to play against their arch cross-city rivals. 

Perhaps it was a slight mismatch in that this Atletico side are very much a work in progress. Real are contending with their own reinvention and this side managed by Ancelotti is also in the process of finding its balance and feet but perhaps slightly advanced in the timeline as compared to Atleti. So it was a game of two teams, both building & both trying to compete fiercely and get the better of each other. However, Real’s star signing Kylian Mbappe would miss the game after picking up a knock.
