The UEFA Champions League draw and La Liga’s schedule put Barcelona and Atlético Madrid in a head-to-head battle across a short period of time. In the first round, Diego Simeone kept his important players on the bench, given Atlético’s situation in the league. Simeone’s side is out of the race for La Liga and mathematically will feature in the Champions League in the 2026-27 season. Hansi Flick won the first game, which solidified Barcelona’s place at the top of the table. Heading into their clash for the first leg in the UCL, Diego Simeone recovered most of his injured and suspended players.

The visitors made two changes to the backline, as Nahuel Molina and Robin Le Normand remained intact, whereas Matteo Ruggeri and David Hancko joined the defensive line. Marcus Llorente slotted next to Koke in midfield. Ademola Lookman and Diego Simeone hugged the touchlines. Thiago Almada made way for Julian Alvarez to lead the attack alongside Antoine Griezmann.

Hansi Flick made two changes to the eleven that started the league clash. Jules Koundé replaced Ronald Araujo at the right back spot. Gerard Martin kept partnering with Pau Cubarsi, with Joao Cancelo filling the left back position. Pedri and Eric Garcia maintained their places in the pivot. Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford had some chalk on their boots, with Dani Olmo operating behind Robert Lewandowski.

An open game from both sides

Similar to the league game, Atlético Madrid started the game pressing high up the pitch in a man-oriented fashion. Alvarez joined Griezmann to engage with the center-backs and funnel the play sideways. Atlético’s wingers jumped onto the opposite fullbacks, with Llorente and Koke marking Pedri and Eric Garcia. Ruggeri and Molina took charge of Barcelona’s wingers, whereas Le Normand followed Lewandowski, with Hancko sweeping behind.

At the start, the visitors channeled the play toward Barcelona’s left side. Gerard Martin prodded the pass onto the dropping Rashford. Koke handed off Garcia to Alvarez to withdraw and cover the left half-space. Llorente tracked Pedri wide and left room inside for Cancelo to drift into, taking advantage of Simeone’s attention with the ball to create separation and receive Rashford’s pass. Meanwhile, Lookman narrowed inside to deal with Olmo and allow his team to keep an extra defender at the backline. However, he was late, as Olmo being momentarily free enabled him to bridge between Cancelo and Cubarsi. As a result, Barcelona accessed the far-side free player, Koundé, who carried the ball forward. Passing through the center via short passes, the Catalans found Rashford, who cut inside and pulled the trigger into Musso’s hands.

Two minutes later, Barcelona generated another goal-scoring opportunity from a turnover. Atlético broke down the Catalans’ first line of pressure via Musso finding Koke coming short to bounce the pass off to Le Normand, who worked the ball wide to Molina. The latter picked out Simeone dropping wide and embarked on a sprint to drag Olmo with him. That would enable the former to pass the ball inside to Koke; however, he missed his pass. Lamine Yamal picked up the loose ball, capitalizing on his central position to punch it to Rashford, putting him in front of the goal. The Englishman squandered the chance to take an early lead.

4th minute: Barcelona’s high press against Atlético’s buildup. After he passes to Ruggeri, Hancko pulls wide to draw Lewandowski with him and unlock the passing lane between Ruggeri and Koke. Pedri and Eric Garcia join the ball side, vacating the center. Hence, Ruggeri, uncontested, clips the ball to Llorente. Rashford retreats toward the Spanish midfielder, with the double pivots swarming around. However, Llorente works the ball back to Koke, who feeds Alvarez in the middle of the park. The Argentinian forward supplies Simeone near the touchlines, whilst Molina proceeds with an underlapping run behind Cancelo. Atlético’s right back cuts the ball across to Cubarsi, who clears the danger away.

Seconds later, Barcelona sat in a 4-2-3-1 medium block. Le Normand, having space and time on the ball, played it around to Simeone. Llorente and Molina swapped positions, with the latter creating separation from Pedri. Despite Cancelo stepping up onto Simeone, the latter was able to find Molina diagonally, which forced Gerard Martin to shift across. That stretched the space between Barcelona’s center-backs for Julian Alvarez to exploit and run in behind. Alvarez dribbled past Martin near the byline, leaving him in his wake, penetrating the box to bypass Pau Cubarsi and get into a goal-scoring position. However, he shot the ball into Juan Garcia’s hands.

One minute later, Diego Simeone’s side appeared to repeat the experience, opting for the left side to attack. Under similar circumstances on the ball as Le Normand was, Hancko curled his pass to Ruggeri to find Lookman in a one-on-one situation against Koundé. Meanwhile, Llorente joined the left side, interchanging positions with Lookman and Ruggeri. However, Barcelona caged them near the touchlines, regaining the ball in the middle of the park to initiate the transition.

Lamine Yamal collected the ball and skipped past Koke. He tucked inside, with Lewandowski pushing Le Normand backward to open up the passing lane between Yamal and Rashford. Molina anticipated the situation, cutting the pass off and launching the counterattack. Within the process, Barcelona had the numerical edge, delaying Atlético’s attack. Nonetheless, the Catalans’ front four’s slow retreat enabled the visitors to work the ball to the left side, where Ruggeri and Lookman overloaded Koundé. The Nigerian winger infiltrated the box and combined with Alvarez, trying his luck with a shot.

Barcelona’s bait to decompress Atlético’s defensive shape

In settled possession, Barcelona had to face Atlético Madrid’s 5-4-1/5-2-3 low block. The hosts had to work the ball around and call for Lamine Yamal’s help. Despite Lookman and Ruggeri doubling up on the eighteen-year-old, Yamal cut in and switched the ball to Rashford. In the meantime, Lewandowski pinned Molina, which allowed Barcelona to generate a two-versus-two situation on the left side. Rashford laid the ball off to Cancelo, who took on Simeone to penetrate the box and fired a shot. Musso easily picked up the Portuguese delivery.

13th minute: after luring out Alvarez and Griezmann, with Lamine Yamal tying Lookman inside, Eric Garcia is able to carry forward and find Koundé. Eric Garcia attacks the gap between Ruggeri and Hancko. Lewandowski drags the backline toward the goal, leaving room for Rashford to receive Garcia’s cross. The English winger puts the ball outside near the right post.

Two minutes later, Barcelona baited Atlético Madrid to press high up the pitch. Pedri and Eric Garcia got closer to the backline, with Cancelo inviting Simeone to jump as the ball traveled across. Gerard Martin spotted Rashford sprinting behind Molina and clipped the ball over the top. Molina recovered, but he wasn’t capable of matching Rashford’s pace. That saw the latter go around the former to enter the box. Meanwhile, Lewandowski sneaked behind Hancko, getting himself into position to receive Rashford’s square pass. However, Le Normand blocked off the Englishman’s delivery.

Since Hansi Flick took his first steps in Barcelona’s dugout, the Catalans have pressed opponents the same way. It was no different against Atlético Madrid. The wingers led the line to jump onto the center-backs. Lewandowski stepped behind alongside Olmo to mark the double pivots. As the play went near the touchlines, the ball-side fullback ran onto the opposite fullback, with the rest of the backline swinging across to cover the space behind. As Atlético opted for the right side, Simeone, Griezmann, and Alvarez’s deeper movements encouraged Martin, Pedri, and Eric Garcia to follow their markers, aiming to swarm around the ball holder. However, the visitors were allowed enough space to work the ball to the underloaded side, where Lookman was isolated against Koundé.

The backward passes were one of Barcelona’s tools to entice the visitors to commit forward and decompress their defensive unit. The Catalans tended to regress in order to progress once the vertical gaps along Atlético’s shape appeared. Barcelona’s midfielders intentionally operated close to the situational back three to expand the space between the lines. As the Catalans funneled the play toward the left side, Cancelo dropped in, pulling out Simeone. The stretched space between the lines served Cancelo and Rashford well in threading passes, whereas Lewandowski pinned the center-backs centrally. That enabled Rashford to attack the space behind Molina to access the penalty box. However, he collided with the visitors’ traffic, preventing him from proceeding.

A twist in the tale

Forty minutes in, Ruggeri dispossessed Lamine Yamal inside the box down the right half-space. The Italian left-back exchanged passes with Koke near the byline before clipping the ball to bypass Barcelona’s counterpress. Lookman bossed Pedri during the duel to win the knockdown, with Koke collecting the second ball and picking out Alvarez. The latter drove into an empty midfield before releasing Simeone behind the backline. Atlético’s winger collided with Cubarsi during the process, which led to a direct red card for the Spanish center-back and a free kick at the edge of the box, which Alvarez brilliantly turned home.

In the second part of the game, Hansi Flick took off Pedri and Lewandowski and brought in Gavi and Fermin Lopez. Rashford operated as a striker with Fermin Lopez on the left side. Eric Garcia functioned as a center-back, with Dani Olmo partnering with Gavi in midfield. Without being affected by the red card, Barcelona succeeded at baiting and breaking down the visitors’ high press. The Catalans tended to pull out Atlético’s midfielders via positional rotations, with the front three anchoring the backline. That resulted in a gap between the lines and behind the defensive line for Barcelona to exploit.

50th minute: Dani Olmo, taking position at the edge of the box, draws Koke up the field. Gavi acts as a situational right back, which encourages Llorente to jump on. That evacuates the space behind Atlético’s midfield line for Cancelo to dash into. Gerard Martin slides a diagonal line-breaking pass to Cancelo, who delivers the ball to Lamine Yamal. The latter, with a trivela pass, sets up Rashford behind Le Normand. Rashford dribbles past Musso and shoots the ball in the outer net.

In the middle of the park, Barcelona sat in a 4-4-1 shape. After replacing Koke, Alex Baena tended to shift across toward the left side to drag Gavi with him, whereas Pubill dummied his backward steps to lure Fermin Lopez to jump. That would give Molina space near the flanks to receive Le Normand’s switch. However, Cancelo aggressively pounced on, with the rest of the backline shuffling across and adjusting their heights to set up the offside trap. In the meantime, Gavi joined Cancelo to disturb Molina, whilst trying to control the knockdown. Eric Garcia collected the loose ball and set up Rashford behind the backline. Le Normand and Pubill’s recovery pace halted Rashford’s movements.

In the deep buildup, Juan Garcia split the center-backs, with Koundé and Cancelo pushing on near the flanks. Barcelona’s wide center-backs forced Griezmann and Sørloth to spread wide. Behind the first line of pressure, Gavi came short, moving toward the right to draw Baena with him. That vacated the space in the center for Dani Olmo to appear for Juan Garcia. From there, the Catalans worked the ball wide, with Fermin Lopez dropping in and pulling out Molina. Hence, Dani Olmo moved his body into the evacuated space, opening up a diagonal passing lane with Lopez. Rashford failed to control Olmo’s pass between the center-backs.

The impact of playing with one man down became tangible as time elapsed. Griezmann’s position between the lines secured a numerical superiority for the visitors in the middle of the park. Moreover, Alex Baena’s lateral movements forced Barcelona’s midfield line to shuffle across to neutralize Baena’s effect. However, that came at the cost of the hosts getting overloaded on the far side. Baena spotted the situation on the left and proceeded by switching the play, where Atlético generated a three-versus-two situation. Barcelona’s lateral shift took time, whereas Alvarez anchored Koundé inside. As a result, Ruggeri comfortably crossed the ball to Sørloth. However, Gerard Martin cleared it away.

70th minute: Alvarez’s backward pass to Griezmann encourages Olmo to step out, leaving Koundé in a two-versus-one situation. Ruggeri plays the ball across. Sørloth heads toward the near post, guiding the ball home.

The backward passes continued to bait Atlético forward, leaving them stretched between the lines. Ten minutes left, in the middle third, Sørloth jumped onto Martin, with Almada backing up the process by running toward Cancelo. Olmo tied Baena’s hands centrally, which allowed Fermin Lopez to dart deep into the space between the lines. Double movements between Lopez and Cancelo pulled apart Atlético’s right side, as the former drew Molina forward to release the Portuguese left back behind. Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal attacked the far post; however, Cancelo’s cross went wide.

85th minute: Dani Olmo drops in and carries the ball around Atlético’s first line of pressure. The hosts work the ball around to Fermin Lopez. Meanwhile, Gavi moves into the space evacuated by Lopez, who draws Molina forward. Llorente, following Gavi wide, frees up the space in front of the backline for Olmo to sneak behind Baena and unlock a diagonal passing lane with Lopez. Olmo switches the play to the right side. But Ruggeri’s early step-out allows him to head the ball out.

Takeaways

Entering with a fully fit and different squad, Diego Simeone was able to manage a game in which his team exploited Barcelona’s famous defensive weaknesses. The Catalans, attacking firepower, led by Lamine Yamal, enabled them to create goal-scoring chances by baiting Atlético Madrid forward and hitting the spaces generated throughout the process on one hand. On the other hand, Barcelona attempted to dismantle Atlético’s low block via Yamal’s brilliance on the right and Rashford and Cancelo’s combinations on the left.

The matchup between Hansi Flick and Diego Simeone is perfectly balanced at one win each, with one game to be played at Atlético’s turf.
