Atlético Madrid – Barcelona: The Catalans Are Seven Points Clear Ahead (1-2)

Barcelona came out victorious in their first match of their grueling triple-header against Atlético Madrid. That saw the Catalans solidify their lead with a seven-point difference from Real Madrid. Dani Olmo as a false nine and Lamine Yamal’s spark gave Barcelona the advantage; however, wide overloads and passes to runners in behind exposed Hansi Flick’s side’s defensive frailties.

Diego Simeone and Hansi Flick evaluated their clash in La Liga differently. For the former, it was a Prova for the high-stakes Champions League encounter. The hopes for La Liga’s title faded long ago for Atlético Madrid, and their qualification to the next Champions League is approximately guaranteed, given the twelve-point difference with Real Betis. Therefore, the preparation for the Copa Del Rey final and the quarter-final of the UCL holds more importance for the success of the 2025-26 season for Los Rojiblancos.

For Hansi Flick, the trip to Madrid was crucial to keep the edge over Real Madrid in the title race. Failure was not an option for the Catalans as their rivals squandered three points in an away game against Real Mallorca. Injuries keep hindering Hansi Flick’s team. Raphinha picked up a hamstring injury sustained whilst fulfilling his international duties with Brazil. Raphinha’s setback was another blow to add to the list of absentees led by Andrea Christensen and Frenkie de Jong.

Hansi Flick fielded Ronald Araujo as a right back and Joao Cancelo as a left back, whereas Gerard Martin partnered Pau Cubarsi in the middle of the defense. Eric Garcia joined Pedri in midfield. Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford hugged the touchlines. Dani Olmo acted as a false nine in front of Fermin Lopez.

Diego Simeone started the game with a 4-4-2 formation on paper, in which Nico Gonzalez joined Clément Lenglet, Robin Le Normand, and Nahuel Molina at the backline. Obed Vargas and Koke formed a partnership in the pivot, with Giuliano Simeone and Álex Baena operating as wide midfielders. Thiago Almada replaced Julian Alvarez to lead the attack with Antoine Griezmann.

Dani Olmo as false nine

At the start of the game, Atlético tended to press high up the pitch and keep an extra defender at the backline. Alex Baena joined Antoine Griezmann to press Barcelona’s center-backs. Koke split Pedri and Eric Garcia, swinging across depending on the ball side. Thiago Almada and Giuliano Simeone narrowed inside to mark the far-side midfielder when the play was funneled toward their opposite side. Obed Vargas kept tabs on Fermin Lopez. Atlético’s fullbacks took charge of the wingers, with one of the center-backs following Dani Olmo’s deeper movements.

Pedri and Eric Garcia tilted toward the right side, with the former stepping behind as a situational right back, which gave license to Araujo to push on and drag Almada forward. That vacated the half-space for Lamine Yamal to dash into. As a result, the quartet drew Atlético’s front and midfield lines’ players across, which freed up the middle of the park for Pedri to find Gerard Martin. Dani Olmo came short to clip the ball in behind for the runner, Rashford.

In settled possession, Joao Cancelo pushed on, swapping positions with Marcus Rashford. On the right, Barcelona composed a wide triangle, as Fermin Lopez and Ronald Araujo joined Lamine Yamal. As a reaction, Nico Gonzalez and Clement Lenglet tended to get tight on their men, with Vargas and Almada swarming around. Consequently, Atlético was able to regain the ball in the middle third and take advantage of Alex Baena and Antoine Griezmann dropping between the lines to overload the Catalans midfield. The hosts had the free man to work the ball in transition and break down Barcelona’s high line.

Five minutes in, Atlético Madrid went fully man-on-man across the pitch, with Vargas and Koke marking the double pivots and Lenglet tracking Fermin Lopez up the field. On the right side, Simeone took a position between Cancelo and Rashford to be able to jump onto the former and offer support for Molina in case the ball went to the English winger. Juan Garcia clipped the ball to Dani Olmo, who dashed in to head it toward Rashford. However, Molina capitalized on Rashford’s first touch to regain possession.

Back on the right side, Obed Vargas took charge of Fermin Lopez when the latter roamed in the center. Hence, Clement Lenglet covered the space behind Nico Gonzalez as he stepped up on Lamine Yamal. The latter and Fermin Lopez proceeded with first-time touch passes to evade Atlético’s wide trap. By dragging Vargas near the flanks, Fermin Lopez was able to carry the ball inside, with Dani Olmo attacking depth and pushing Le Normand backward. So, Pedri could arrive from behind. He opted to slice through Atlético’s backline; however, Le Normand picked up the loose ball.

By being direct in possession, Barcelona exploited Atlético Madrid’s transition from a zonal defense to a high press. Nine minutes in, Gerard Martin and Joao Cancelo had space to work the ball to Marcus Rashford, as Antoine Griezmann and Giuliano Simeone were late in their jumps. In the meantime, Eric Garcia drew Koke forward, stretching the space between the lines. That saw Rashford take a diagonal nudge into space to skip past Molina and gallop the length of the pitch until Le Normand halted the Englishman’s forward carry at the edge of the box.

14th minutes: Barcelona’s buildup against Atlético’s man-oriented high press. Juan Garcia slides a line-breaking pass to the dropping Dani Olmo. The latter curls the ball to Lamine Yamal, who nutmegs Nico Gonzalez to skip past him. Yamal, with a Trivela pass, sets up Fermin Lopez behind the home team’s backline. Molina’s recovery pace enables him to disturb Lopez in the shot.

Atlético’s wide overloads and clipped passes in behind

Ten minutes in, Atlético Madrid lined up in a 2-3-5 shape in possession. The hosts dragged Barcelona’s 4-4-2 medium block toward the left side for Lenglet to switch the play to Simeone. Meanwhile, Molina, with an underlapping run, joined his compatriot to outnumber Cancelo near the touchlines. The rest of Barcelona’s backline shuffled across; however, Griezmann and Baena attacked the depth through the gaps across the defensive line. Molina slid a channel ball to Griezmann, who dribbled past Cubarsi and Araujo to shoot the ball into Garcia’s hands.

Lofted passes to fullbacks appeared to be the go-to plan for Atlético to bypass Barcelona’s high press. Additionally, the hosts’ midfielders baited their markers forward to expand the space between the lines. Upon receiving, Nico Gonzalez would prod the ball back onto the wide Lenglet to clip it to Griezmann. Meanwhile, Koke sneaked behind Barcelona’s midfield to generate a four-versus-four situation. Griezmann headed the ball into the center. However, a miscommunication between Koke and Simeone delayed the attack. Moreover, Cancelo collected Koke’s miscued pass and initiated the transition through Rashford. Simeone’s recovery run stopped the visitors’ proceedings.

28th minute: Barcelona sits in a narrow 4-2-3-1 medium block. Almada tucks inside, leaving room for Nico Gonzalez to push on. Lenglet sets him up near the touchlines. That forces Barcelona’s backline to shift across. Hence, Baena runs down the space between Araujo and Cubarsi, with Almada and Griezmann attacking the gaps across the backline. Baena, with a square pass, puts Griezmann in front of the goal. The latter squanders an opportunity to lead the score.

In the middle of the park, Fermin Lopez would jump onto Clement Lenglet. Additionally, Almada having the freedom to join Baena and Koke in the center enabled Atlético to overload Pedri and Eric Garcia. Almada and Koke would thread passes around Pedri and supply Giuliano Simeone near the flanks. With Rashford staying slightly high and Almada taking Griezmann’s position down the right half-space, the visitors created a numerical superiority around Cancelo. Simeone would slide the ball, releasing Almada near the byline to cut it back.

In the defensive half, Atlético Madrid sat in a 5-4-1 low block. Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo switched positions, with the latter joining Lamine Yamal and Ronald Araujo on the right. Araujo would draw Almada’s attention so Eric Garcia could exploit the gap between Koke and Almada to access Dani Olmo. The latter combined passes with Lamine Yamal, picked out Fermin Lopez at the edge of the box. Meanwhile, Yamal attacked the gate between Nico Gonzalez and Clement Lenglet to collect Lopez’s through ball. The eighteen-year-old missed a one-on-one situation against the goalkeeper.

As aforementioned, Barcelona’s wingers operated high out of possession, which led to the fullbacks being overloaded. Griezmann would distract the center-backs, whereas Giuliano Simeone would curve his run to avoid the offside, exploiting Cubarsi’s blindside to get in behind. Clement Lenglet clipped the ball to Simeone, whose first touch set him up to score the lead. Two minutes later, Cancelo dispossessed Simeone, and Pedri collected the loose ball. Dani Olmo dropped deeper and fed Rashford near the touchlines. The English winger pushed back Atlético’s defensive line due to his carry. Arriving at the edge of the box, Rashford combined with Olmo in a one-two to break down the backline and power through Musso to level the tie.

Barcelona against ten men

The last minute of the first half saw Barcelona invite Atlético Madrid to press for Eric Garcia to release Lamine Yamal beyond the backline. Nico Gonzalez fouled Barcelona’s winger, which led to his red card. Diego Simeone proceeded by bringing in Matteo Ruggeri as a substitute for Koke.

The numerical edge drove Barcelona to commit more numbers in the final third. Gerard Martin joined Cancelo and Rashford on the left side. Eric Garcia, Dani Olmo, and Ferran Torres dragged Atlético’s 5-3-1 low block deeper. That gave the left-side crew the chance to switch the ball to Lamine Yamal. Atlético’s outfield players were packed inside the penalty box. As a result, Pedri and Bernal had space at the edge of the box and were ready to shoot upon receiving. However, Lamine Yamal opted for taking the initiative and pulling the trigger into Atlético’s wall.

Centrally, Cancelo operating down the left half-space enticed Le Normand to step up. As a reaction, Dani Olmo tended to exploit the space vacated by the Spanish center-back. José María Giménez swept behind his teammate, taking charge of Olmo. Barcelona recycled to Pedri, who pulled out Almada. Meanwhile, Ferran Torres benefited from Javier Morcillo’s eyes on Pedri to creep behind him. That unlocked a passing lane between Torres and Pedri to break through. Olmo linked Torres and Cancelo at the edge of the box. The Portuguese penetrated the penalty box, ready to shoot. Giménez blocked off Cancelo’s delivery.

70th minute: After winning the second ball following a throw-in, Pedri feeds Eric Garcia. Barcelona overloads the hosts’ midfield. Garcia slides the ball to Torres between the lines. The latter lays it off to Olmo, who flicks the ball over Le Normand to dribble past him. Olo spots Torres arriving late and sets him in front of the goal. Musso heroically saves the shot.

After Hansi Flick took off Rashford, Cancelo operated as a left winger. Still three minutes left, Barcelona overloaded the right side, with Gavi switching the play to Pedri down the central channel. The latter picked out Cancelo and put him in a one-on-one situation against Almada. The latter dribbled past the former and fired a shot. Musso’s save-clearance landed on Lewandowski’s shoulder to guide the ball home.

Atlético Madrid reacted by pressing high up the pitch. However, Barcelona baited the midfield and front lines forward, whereas Atlético’s defensive line didn’t back up the operation. Resultantly, Ferran Torres dropped in the stretched space between the lines to lay the ball off for Cancelo. The Portuguese drifted infield, scampering forward and leaving Gimenez in his wake. Cancelo fed Lewandowski between Le Normand and Ruggeri. Barcelona’s striker flicked the ball back to Lamine Yamal, who spotted Koundé’s overlap. The French right back blasted the cross over.

Takeaways

The use of Dani Olmo as a false nine to come from high to low positions, coupled with the off-ball movements of the players around, served Barcelona well to break down Atlético Madrid’s high press and attack the space behind or push Simeone’s side deeper. On one hand, Atlético Madrid attempted to set up wide traps to regain the ball and hurt the Catalans on counters. On the other hand, the hosts tried to exploit Barcelona’s wingers’ high position in a medium block by overloading the wide areas and generating gaps across the backline to attack.

The red card turned the game into an attack against defense, in which Barcelona recalled the wingers’ individual brilliance and quick combinations down the center to dismantle Atlético’s low block. Simeone’s team had some chances from counterattacks, exposing Barcelona’s woes in transitions. At the end, the Catalans nipped the game in the bud, gaining an important push toward La Liga’s title.
