Located at two ends of the Bundesliga table, a clash between Bayern Munich and Holstein Kiel was expected to be the most predictable fixture of the weekend. Vincent Kompany’s team has been in sizzling hot form this season. However, in recent weeks, there have been minor tumbles along the way. In mid-December, Bayern suffered their first defeat in the Bundesliga against Mainz. Just a few weeks earlier, they also endured a shocking 3-0 loss to Feyenoord in the Champions League despite evidently creating the better chances. That has been a theme during this tricky period for Bayern, as opponents have managed to creep back into games that they dominated. So, a match against a side tied in last place represented an opportunity to produce a commanding victory.

For Holstein Kiel, the game represented a chance to cause arguably the biggest upset of the season. With the odds stacked heavily against them, Holstein had nothing to lose and everything to gain. If they pulled off the impossible, it could steer their season away from relegation, with Heidenheim and Hoffenheim not too far away to catch up.
