If a few results go in favor of the lower-end teams, that gap could easily be overturned. The same is true for the Champions League qualification race, with only five points separating second-placed RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt, who rank eighth.

The weekend provided Freiburg with an opportunity to create a bit of distance from their close competitors since Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach had lost against Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, respectively. The same was the case for Borussia Dortmund, since Leipzig were surprisingly defeated 3-1 by Union Berlin.

Therefore, securing three points would have been significant for Freiburg and Dortmund in a crucial weekend.
