Liverpool's defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek ended their European hopes, but they had the chance to bounce back quickly with a trip to Wembley at the weekend, where they faced Newcastle United. The Magpies were looking to end their seventy-year wait for silverware, having fallen at the final hurdle just two years ago against Manchester United.

Arne Slot lined his side up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation, with Jarrel Quansah filling in at right back for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold. He was joined in the back four by Ibrahima Konaté, Virgil van Dijk, and Andrew Robertson. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister partnered in central midfield, with Dominik Szoboszlai ahead of them. Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz then completed the frontline.
