With just six points separating Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the table, Vincent Kompany’s side has very little room for error. In recent weeks, they have looked shaky. Despite a dominant performance in the last Bundesliga weekend, Bayern only edged past St. Pauli with a 3-2 win. Prior to that, they drew 1-1 against Union Berlin while suffering a shock 3-2 defeat to Bochum.
This contrasted with Jess Thorup’s Augsburg, who have been in blistering form. Since losing 1-0 to Stuttgart in the first week of December, they have been undefeated in the league. Although Sebastian Hoeneß’s team defeated them again in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals, their Bundesliga form continued — stringing together an eleven-game unbeaten streak prior to facing Bayern. During this period, Thorup’s side proved to be indestructible — only conceding three goals over that run while also being effective in offensive transitions. Hence, Kompany was set to face a stern test to break down Augsburg’s defensive block while coping with the transitions.
