Tactical analysis and match report by Fahd Ahmed.
It was a crucial weekend in the Bundesliga, with four teams vying for a Champions League spot facing each other on Saturday. The first match was between Hoffenheim and Stuttgart, which dramatically ended 3-3. It provided Leverkusen with an opportunity to overtake, as they were three points behind Stuttgart and level on goal difference heading into their clash against Ole Werner’s side.
It was not an easy proposition for Kasper Hjulmand, as the third-placed RB Leipzig had been in hot form over the past few weeks. They picked up five consecutive wins in the league, with their previous 3-1 victory against Union Berlin a representation of their attacking quality.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen have also had decent results over the past month, including a vital 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund and a 6-3 smashing of Wolfsburg. It has not been perfect, of course, as their run also comprised a 2-1 loss to Augsburg and an understandable defeat to the recently crowned back-to-back champions Bayern Munich.
