Chelsea – Tottenham Hotspur: De Zerbi’s Spurs Break Stamford Bridge Hoodoo As Chelsea Self-Destruct (0-2)

Spurs beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to exorcise their poor away record against the Blues. A Mike Penders own goal and a goal from Mathys Tel in the second half sunk Chelsea as Cole Palmer got sent off for accumulating two yellow cards. In truth, Spurs dominated possession and the balance of play as Chelsea fed on scraps & ultimately lost their longstanding exemplary record against their London rivals.

The evening was wet, the crowd expectant, and the tactical contrast stark. Stamford Bridge had long been a graveyard for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League era. Prior to this Matchday 8 fixture in the Premier League, Spurs had managed only one league victory at Chelsea in the previous 35 or 41 visits (sources vary slightly on the exact count of their historical meetings). However, their last triumph arrived in April 2018 via a 3-1 win for Spurs.

In all competitions the drought stretched even further in places, with only a solitary success from dozens of trips to SW6. Chelsea’s recent dominance in the fixture with multiple home wins across the previous three seasons, including a 2-1 in May 2026, made the result feel improbable. Roberto De Zerbi’s side arrived as clear underdogs, sitting near the bottom of the table after seven games with just one win, a midweek 3-1 against Coventry that lifted them off the foot of the standings. Chelsea, under Xabi Alonso, sat fourth with 13 points with four wins, one draw, two defeats, fresh from a 2-0 away win at Everton and a 5-1 thrashing . . .
