Relegation battles rarely produce beautiful football, and this clash between Girona FC and Elche CF was defined more by fear, tension, and survival instincts than fluid attacking sequences. Girona dominated possession throughout the match, but Elche’s aggressive individual-oriented defending and compact low block suffocated Míchel’s side, whose inability to turn territorial superiority into clear chances ultimately condemned them to relegation.

Out of possession, Girona defended in a 4-4-2 structure with Ounahi stepping up alongside Tsygankov. The pressing setup was specifically designed to eliminate central progression from Elche’s first phase. One forward would jump onto the center-backs while the other shadowed Aguado, preventing the lone pivot from receiving freely between the first and second lines.

The structure itself reflected many of Míchel’s typical defensive principles. Girona defended with a relatively high backline and compressed the vertical distance between defense and midfield, trying to remain compact centrally while forcing Elche toward the wings. Rather than overcommitting to pressing traps high up the pitch, Girona preferred maintaining positional compactness and denying interior circulation.
