Jonathan David converted a penalty after a handball by Eduardo Camavinga inside the box & the Ligue 1 side held on to complete a shock 1-0 win in the newly formed Champions League group stage.

It was a historic night at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy and one for French football to remember after Lille inflicted a shock 1-0 loss to European giants Real Madrid. The smoke inside the stadium loomed ominously shortly after kick-off; there was perhaps something in the air about this night. For all the talk of Ligue 1 being a ‘farmer’s league’, Lille perhaps orchestrated a minor French revolution in their own right amidst the drums & drones inside the stadium, playing out a result calling for those dubbing it a ‘farmer’s league’ to put their money where their mouth is.
