Manchester United & Chelsea shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty from the spot after a foul by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez on Rasmus Hojlund in the second half. Chelsea equalised five minutes later after Moises Caicedo’s volley found the back of the net. Both sides had to settle for a draw in an otherwise even game at Old Trafford.

Manchester United fans haven’t had much to sing about since their FA Cup victory over Man City last season. For that matter, they haven’t had much to sing about all season. That cup win now seems aeons ago as Dutch manager Erik Ten Hag’s reign at Old Trafford was ruthlessly cut short by INEOS as they pulled the plug after a poor string of results this season that found United grappling with the slews of mediocrity languishing firmly in mid-table. In that sense, there have been few positives to note for the Red Devils this campaign.
As the teams lined up on the pitch at the Theater Of Dreams, it was glaringly evident that both these sides were firmly forged in transition. For Manchester United, interim boss Ruud Van Nistelrooy came on the back of a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup in his first game in charge as temporary manager going into this game against Chelsea. Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca’s Blues were knocked out of the Carabao Cup losing 2-0 to Newcastle having beaten them 2-1 in the Premier League just before that; mixed . . .
