The four contestants in the Group of Death have not fought their best fight. Nevertheless, this war has sapped the life out of several camps heading into the final furlong, where futures were still uncertain.

Newcastle United have stretched their squad to the limit. The drain on domestic efforts in the Premier League has developed hand in hand with a Champions League campaign gone awry. A double defeat against Borussia Dortmund dealt a dagger, and the grave injustice of a 1-1 draw at the death away at PSG  pushes them to the brink of a short stint in the top tier of continental competition. It is a night for the might of myths: the club now calls on the clamor of St. James' Park to overwhelm their opponent.
