Olympique Lyonnais – OGC Nice: An Ineffective Siege at the Groupama Stadium (1-0)

Olympique Lyonnais continued their impressive run under Pierre Sage with a fourth victory in a row, as they defeated OGC Nice by a single goal. Lyon climbed up to 11th place on Friday night, while Nice, on the other hand, could drop from second to fourth if results over the weekend go against them.

A victory against Olympique de Marseille sparked a turnaround in fortunes for Olympique Lyonnais, and they entered this match against second-placed OGC Nice on the back of three wins in a row across all competitions. After a season that started with the club placed firmly at the foot of the table and two different managers in Laurent Blanc and Fabio Grosso, it finally looks as if their third appointment Pierre Sage has found the winning formula for Les Gones. 

Sage lined his side up in a 4-3-3 shape. Anthony Lopes was between the posts, with a backline of Nicolás Tagliafico, Duje Ćaleta-Car, Clinton Mata, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The midfield three consisted of Orel Mangala, Nemanja Matić, and Maxence Caqueret. Up front, Saïd Benrahma and Ernest Nuamah were on the wings, with Alexandre Lacazette as the lone number nine. 

Nice knew that the title was out of their hands after last weekend’s capitulation to AS Monaco. Eleven points separated them from Paris Saint-Germain before the start of the weekend, the hope instead was to maintain their status as best of the . . .
