Real Betis – Real Madrid: Betis complicates Madrid’s build-up and punish their attacking imbalance (1–0)
Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the new Mourinho era as Real Betis combined an aggressive high press with a disciplined second-half low block to secure a one-nil victory. Madrid created enough opportunities to win the match, but their problems in possession and their lack of defensive awareness repeatedly exposed the structural weaknesses of their four-two-three-one.

Betis refuse to retreat
Both teams started in a 4-2-3-1 in paper, but their interpretations without the ball were very different. While Madrid eventually defended in a very narrow 4-2-3-1, Betis were much more proactive 4-4-2, advancing their lines and pressing high rather than simply retreating into a compact block.
Betis frequently used six players to construct a central cage around Madrid’s build-up: Hernandez, Isco, Fornals, Roca, Bernal and Antony. Their positioning blocked the central passing lanes and forced Madrid backwards, leaving Valverde, Camavinga and the centre-backs repeatedly circulating towards Courtois rather than progressing through midfield.
This exposed one of Madrid’s biggest problems in possession. Their difficulties were not simply caused by Betis’ pressing intensity, but by the lack of midfielders consistently showing the awareness required to solve pressure. Madrid often lacked players who would scan before receiving, move intelligently to create a passing angle, show for the ball at the right moment and play quickly from one touch. Without those movements, the first phase became disconnected from the midfield phase, allowing Betis to maintain their central cage.
