With third place up for grabs, Atlético Madrid travelled to Villarreal for the penultimate La Liga game. After a positive start offensively by Atlético, Villarreal scored quick-fire goals to change the momentum. With a strong first-half display, the game was almost beyond Atlético’s reach. However, Villarreal decided to stamp their authority further by scoring another and sealing a five-star performance with a five-goal victory.

On the final day of the La Liga season, many narratives were yet to be finalized. At the top end of the league table, third place was up for grabs since Villarreal and Atlético Madrid were tied on points. Since they were even equal on goal difference, Villarreal only edged the standings due to goals scored.
Villarreal have enjoyed a great domestic season, completing consecutive finishes in Champions League qualification places. Their cup runs have not been as positive, picking up only one victory on the European stage whilst suffering an early exit in the Copa del Rey after surprisingly losing to Racing Santander. Nevertheless, it was yet another positive season due to their domestic success. Considering their prior summer transfer window, where key personnel departed, Marcelino García Toral did a great job to be in a position to marginally better their 70-point 2024/25 campaign.
