Villarreal and Sevilla battled the entire game for a match that meant everything for Sevilla, and not much for a Villarreal team that has already accomplished their goals. And still, they gave a great spectacle and tactical battle worth looking deep into it.

For thirty minutes, Villarreal looked in complete control. Marcelino’s positional tweaks dismantled Sevilla’s narrow pressing structure and generated a stream of free men during buildup, but the game slowly turned once Sevilla adapted and began attacking the spaces around Villarreal’s famously compact defensive block.

What followed was a fascinating tactical swing: Villarreal dominated the opening phase through clever spacing and buildup manipulation, while Sevilla gradually transformed the match into a contest centered around half-space occupation, overloads in the final third, and aggressive attacking rotations.

Sevilla defended in a narrow 5-3-2 structure. Odysseas Vlachodimos started behind a back five of Carmona, César Azpilicueta, Kike Salas, Suazo, and Oso, while Vargas, Lucien Agoumé, and Sow formed the midfield triangle behind the forward pairing of Adams and Neal Maupay.

The key detail of Sevilla’s pressing structure was the orientation of the two strikers. Maupay and Adams were primarily tasked with shadow-marking Villarreal’s double pivot of Gueye and Parejo. Rather than pressing the center-backs aggressively, they positioned themselves between the pivots and Sevilla’s midfield line, attempting to disconnect Villarreal’s central circulation.
