An enthralling game that had heavy consequences for qualification for European football swung in Frankfurt’s favour despite Freiburg taking the early lead. Tactical analysis & match report by Fahd Ahmed.
It was the final weekend of the Bundesliga, and although Bayern Munich had already been crowned champions, there was much to fight for as plenty of teams were trying to qualify for European football. With little separation between them in the league table, there were numerous potential outcomes. So, each result had a huge consequence for their competitors.
The most decisive tie of the weekend was between Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg for many reasons. Firstly, the victor would secure Champions League football, while the loser would most definitely drop out. Since Frankfurt had a strong goal difference, the worst they could do was Europa League. However, the same was not true for Freiburg, as they could drop to sixth place and finish in a spot for the Europa Conference League if Mainz defeated Bayer Leverkusen. This was also assuming that Borussia Dortmund would defeat relegation-bound Holstein Kiel. Nevertheless, the potential last-minute shuffles were not a focus for either manager. Their eyes were solely set on defeating their opponent on Saturday.
