Instituto – San Lorenzo: Instituto’s Defensive Wall Proved Too Strong for San Lorenzo (1-0).

San Lorenzo’s early start gave the game a good light, but Instituto’s defense was able to hold off their opponent until they got some momentum up front. Instituto found roads to progress past San Lorenzo’s mid-block and arrive in the final third. Once Instituto took the lead, it was always going to be harder for San Lorenzo to get back into the game.

Instituto have been top of the Clausura league table and have a chance to regain their spot with a win against San Lorenzo. Their incredible start hasn’t gone unnoticed as they’ve won four out of their six games, losing and drawing a game each. In that same span, they remain unbeaten at home this season with four clean sheets.

They’ve been airtight so far, conceding two goals in six games. They face a San Lorenzo side that have struggled so far in the Clausura. They’ve struggled to score enough goals with two goals in six games.  San Lorenzo have lost three game so far, however, they’ve gotten four points in their last two games. This gave them some form of confidence heading into this game.

Marcos Ledesma started in goal for Instituto with a back three of Jonatan Galván, Leonel Mosevich and Fernando Alarcón. The wingbacks, Giuliano Cerato and Diego Sosa held the width as Matías Gallardo and Gustavo Abregú operated in midfield. Jeremías Lázaro, Jhon Córdoba and Matías Tissera made up the front three.

José Devecchi stayed in goal for San Lorenzo with a back four Ezequiel Herrera, Danilo Arboleda, Emiliano Amor and Teo Rodríguez Pagano as the defensive unit. Ignacio Perruzzi operated as the sole pivot in midfield while Nicolás Tripichio and Juan Pablo Álvarez operated slightly higher in attack. Alexis Cuello, Matías Reali, and Rodrigo Auzmendi were the front three in attack.

On the ball, San Lorenzo set up in a 4-1-4-1 shape on the ball. They operated with a sole pivot with the two midfielders high up dropping to receive the ball in this phase. Instituto defended in a 5-2-3 shape, meaning they were overloaded in the first line of the press. The forwards were very fluid in their movements, especially the left winger Cuello and Auzmendi, the striker, who dropped deep to receive the ball.

Instituto’s 5-2-3 press proved to be ineffective in restricting San Lorenzo from progressing the ball. The Instituto front three often put pressure on the back four, with the striker tasked to cover the pivot at the same time while doing so. The two midfielders in the second line of the covered the two attacking midfielders in San Lorenzo’s 4-1-4-1 shape.

While doing this, the Instituto striker often failed to cover the passing lane to the defensive midfielder. This led to the center backs finding the defensive midfielder when the striker put pressure on the ball carrier. In this sequences, the defensive midfielder was able to drive into the space in front of him and start an attack. The defensive midfielder receiving the ball attracted pressure from the Instituto midfielders. Attracting a midfielder meant freeing up a teammate for San Lorenzo.

San Lorenzo were able to find the spare midfielder higher up the field and play between the lines. Instituto’s press fell apart from the first two lines of the press, but the numbers in the defensive line made it hard for San Lorenzo to get any box entries from central areas.

Instituto’s momentum

Not long after San Lorenzo’s early momentum with the ball, Instituto quickly grew into the game because of the structure of their build up. Instituto’s 3-4-3 build up faced a 4-1-4-1 high block from San Lorenzo. San Lorenzo faced an overload in the first line with their fullbacks failing to jump and put pressure. This allowed Instituto center backs to have more time on the ball and use their extra players to make extra passes.

Instituto’s 7v5 overload in the first and second line gave them circulation and control. San Lorenzo players in the first and second line had to be cautious when jumping in order to cover the space. The San Lorenzo midfielders often jumped to put pressure, but when they did, Instituto often found the opposition midfielders left unmarked.

Instituto’s momentum continued grow as they found more solutions to start attacks. They did this from their build up sequences. One of them was being able to find their inside wingers between the lines. Cordoba, who was the right winger, received the ball in between the lines and used his quick feet as well as his strength to hold off the opposition around him and find his teammates in higher positions.

San Lorenzo’s 4-1-4-1 shape looked much more porous when Instituto progressed through the lines. The San Lorenzo center backs hesitated to jump to the players found between the lines, with the defensive midfielder putting pressure ballside.

Momentum into key moments

Instituto’s wingbacks were key when they broke through the press. They made runs in wide areas and loved to combine with the inside wingers in wide. Although they broke the press in central areas, they loved to spread the way in wide areas and attack with their fullbacks.

Wide combinations was a huge part of Instituto’s attack. Overlapping runs were made to get crosses in the box and this created chances for Instituto. In some moments where Herrera pressed pressed Sosa, Tissera made runs into the half spaces to exploit this wide areas.

Wide areas and crosses was the aim for the fullbacks and with the opposite attacking the box, there more numbers in the box. Not too long after in the second half, Instituto found a breakthrough and it was the attacking fullback that made impact.

After the goal, Instituto changed to a 5-4-1 shape without the ball and resisted to put pressure on the ball. This allowed them to be more compact and cover spaces very well. San Lorenzo on the hand went with a more attacking substitution and changed to a two striker setup. In the end, Instituto were able to withstand pressure and get the result.

Takeaways

Instituto’s 1-0 victory over San Lorenzo was ultimately defined by their ability to find solutions to gain momentumand their ability to adapt after taking the lead. San Lorenzo started the game with greater control in possession, exploiting weaknesses in Instituto’s 5-2-3 press to consistently find their pivot and progress through the first two lines. However, Instituto’s back three and compact defensive line prevented San Lorenzo from turning this progression into consistent box entries through central areas.

Instituto found greater control through their 3-4-3 build-up. Their 7v5 overload against San Lorenzo’s high block allowed them to circulate possession and exploit spaces between the lines. Their inside wingers, particularly Córdoba, provided an important outlet between the lines, while the wingbacks created further problems through wide combinations and overlapping runs.

Cerato’s far-post finish rewarded this attacking approach, after which Instituto shifted into a 5-4-1 and prioritised compactness over aggressive pressing. This adjustment successfully limited San Lorenzo’s attacking threat despite their move to a two-striker system. The result further strengthens Instituto’s excellent start to the Clausura and, importantly, maintains their unbeaten home record. For San Lorenzo, the defeat highlights their continued attacking struggles and inability to convert periods of possession and progression into decisive chances.
